PRESENTATION OF US AND THE PLANTS WE SAW IN SOUTH AFRICA

Marcel and Sylvie on the Garden Route 2018

Hi, the Botanists!

We are a couple of French retired teachers (me : French and English, my husband : Physics and Chemistry) travelling in distant countries to avoid the European winter and take the opportunity of discovering new people, new cultures and new landscapes.

We love travelling but also nature and plants, especially cacti and succulents.
I have always lived with plants as a child, my mother being crazy for gardening, cacti and succulents.
Then, our son then 13 fell in love with these plants. So, every time we travelled, we took the opportunity of observing  and taking pictures of as many as we could .
At home, he grew plants and now that he lives 9000kms from us (in La Réunion island), we are in charge of a part of his cacti and succulents so now we have a nice collection of  them at home in France ( south Burgundy)
We love looking for plants in the countries we visit, not only yours, but Mexico as well (cacti) : this gives us a goal when walking and an opportunity of enjoying various landscapes.

We travelled twice in South Africa : from mid-January  to mid-March 2017
                                                    and from mid-January to mid-march 2018
this is to avoid the european winter!

We will stay in your country again  from mid-January to mid-march 2020.
We organize our trips ourselves, planning a circuit, booking accommodation at people's homes and hiring a car (a small car only is affordable for us for 2 months)

We would enjoy roaming the countryside with you , looking for plants and learning more.
That would also give us the opportunity of exchanging with you.

We make it very clear that we are not interested in collecting plants
but we would enjoy an opportunity to go walking with
knowledgeable people and perhaps you could recommend
a safe place for us to walk : we are aware  that there is a lot of concern
about the illegal collecting of succulents at the moment.

We are only amateurs but I can say we are quite proud of the specimens we saw in the different regions of South-Africa we visited.

You can have a look at our blogs :

You can see photos of our plants at home, in summer outside, in autumn, winter and spring in the conservatory or greenhouse.

Here are two maps so that you can see where the plants below  were sighted.
I hope I can remember the names (without too many errors) and  the locations for each plant!

2017

2018

We met one of your botanists Petra Broddle from the Blaauwberg CREW group through some friends of ours in France and she kindly showed us the flora around Cape Town (Lion's head, Blauberg and Silvermine.
We are still in touch and as I wondered if we could join a team during our stay, she provided us with a lists of contacts of CREW.
We chose to contact those among you who are responsible for a zone we are supposed to stay in.

This is what our circuit  looks like :
We booked a week in Muizenberg, then we go to Langerbann, then Springbok, then the Namibian border,  Upington , Karoo , then the Indian ocean coast and back to Cape town.

Here are a few plants we saw during our trips in 2017 and 2018 (the location may not be always exact)

You can leave a commentary , if you don't have a gmail account, you can do it in "Anonymous".
I hope we can share our passion with you next winter.
